Kelimutu Lake has transformed its colour again!

Kelimutu Lake

Do you know about Kelimutu Lake? It’s usually known as The Three Color Lake in Indonesia. It’s located in Flores island, NTT, Indonesia. The word “keli” means a mount and “mutu” means boiling. Kelimutu Lake is on top of the Kelimutu mountain. It’s containing 3 summit crater lakes of varying colours. Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue and is the westernmost of the three lakes. The other two lakes, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red in color, respectively. The local people in there believe that the colour of Kelimutu Lakes have their own meaning and a potential power of controlling nature. Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai which is usually coloured in blue is belief as a place for the spirit of young people gathered. Tiwu Ata Polo is the same as Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai but Tiwu Ata Polo is for a spirit of bad people.  And the last, Tiwu Ata Mbupu is for the old people’s spirit.

After eruption in 1886, the mount remained three crater lakes with formerly distinct colors; red, blue and white. The colors, however, have changed continually since the eruption of Mount Iya in Ende in 1969. The changes of its colors make Kelimutu different from others and become one of the attractive places to be seen. According to the scientists, the changes caused by thegeological and chemical processes in the bottom of the lakes. It could be also resulted from refraction of the sunlight, the bacteria populations and the chemicals dissolved in the water. Kelimutu has been determined as one of the National Parks with 5300 Hectares large, which is known as Kelimutu National Park. It sorrounded by forest with the rare floras and faunas such as palm trees, pine, mountain fig (casuarina yunghuniana), red wood (pterocarpus sp), edelweiss, hog (sus vitatus), javan porcupine (hystrix javanica), the giant rat (papagomys armandvellei), monkey (macaca fascicularis) and gerugiwa (kind of bird). besides natural conservation, this park is also exploited for tourist attraction gathers with parks like Leuser National Park, Kerinci, Komodo, Ujung Kulon and others.

And now, there are weird activities about this lake. In year 2009, this lake had changed its colour just about 8 months after the last tranformation.  Now, the 3 lakes have changed its colour to green. So, there’s only 1 colour in Kelimutu Lake now. Many people have come to see this phenomenon. There are some rumours that this transformation will trigger a big impact for the nature. Just hoping nothing bad will happen. :)
